Marketing for plumbers, from the leak to the boiler swap

Marketing for plumbers means running two different systems side by side: one for someone who needs a plumber right now, and one for someone planning a bathroom or a boiler months ahead. The first is won on Google and a fast reply; the second is won on photographs, reviews and a quote that turns up on time.

Two kinds of work

Emergency or planned: two kinds of plumbing work, two kinds of marketing.

Most marketing for plumbers treats every job the same. A burst pipe at eleven at night and a new boiler planned for spring are different customers, found in different places, and worth very different money.

This is the short version of what we would say on a call: how each kind of plumbing work is found, the six things that put you in the map results, and where most plumbing leads are lost.

An emergency plumbing job is won in minutes. Somebody has water coming through the kitchen ceiling, they search, and they ring the first plumber who looks local and answers. Nobody compares websites at that point. They compare who picks up.

Planned work is the opposite. A new boiler, a bathroom refit or a system upgrade is researched for weeks. The customer reads reviews, looks at photographs and gets three quotes. That buyer can be reached before they start searching, which is what paid social is good at.

Good marketing for plumbers does not pick one. It lets search catch the emergencies while one paid channel fills the diary with the planned work that pays best. The mechanics of the paid side are on our page about Meta ads for trades, and Google Ads is the option when you need the phone ringing this month.

Emergency call-outs.

Won on search and the map result. The speed you answer decides it.

Boiler installs and swaps.

Planned, high value and researched. Paid social and reviews do the work.

Bathrooms and refits.

Visual. Your own before and after photographs are the advert.

Servicing and landlord work.

Repeat revenue. A simple reminder list beats any advert for this.

The map result

Local SEO for plumbers: six things that put you in the map results.

When somebody searches for a plumber, the three map results under the adverts take most of the calls. Getting into them costs nothing. It is also where most plumbing firms have done half the job.

The six fixes are below. The full method, written for the building trades as a whole, is in our guide to SEO for builders.

01. Finish the Google Business Profile, not just claim it

Primary category set to plumber, or heating engineer if that is the work you want more of. Then every service typed in as its own entry: leak repairs, boiler installation, bathroom fitting, drain unblocking.

02. Set it up as a service-area business

If you work from home, hide the address and list the towns you cover. You do not need a shop front to rank in the places you work.

03. Build one page per type of work

Boiler installation, emergency plumbing, bathrooms, landlord safety checks. One page each on your website, so Google has something specific to point at.

04. Ask for reviews that name the job and the town

A review that says new combi boiler fitted in Horsham does more for you than one that says great service. Ask on the day, with the link ready in a text message.

05. Show your registrations

Gas Safe registration and any manufacturer accreditations belong on the profile, the website and the adverts. They are what a careful customer checks before letting you in.

06. Keep your name, number and address identical everywhere

Website, Google, Facebook and every directory, in the same format each time. Mismatches quietly hold back local rankings and cost nothing to fix.

After the phone rings

Plumbing leads are won or lost after the phone rings.

Most plumbers we speak to do not have a lead problem. They have a response problem, and it is cheaper to fix.

You are under a sink all day, which is a real constraint and not an excuse. The fix is a system rather than a promise to be quicker: an automatic reply that tells the customer when you will ring, and a fixed half hour each afternoon to ring everyone back.

Boiler quotes need a second and third touch. People take weeks to decide, and a quote sent once and never mentioned again is money you already spent to generate. A follow-up at a week and another at a month recovers work that would otherwise go to whoever rang last. The longer version of this is in construction lead generation.

Then write down where every job came from. One column in a spreadsheet is enough. Without it you cannot tell which channel is paying for itself, and you cannot work out what a trade lead should cost for your business.

Every enquiry logged, answered and followed up. Most plumbing jobs are lost between the first two columns.
Straight answers

Marketing for plumbers: questions, answered plainly.

Do Facebook ads work for plumbers?

For planned work such as boiler installs and bathrooms, yes. For emergencies, no. Somebody with a burst pipe searches, they do not scroll.

Are lead platforms worth it for plumbers?

They are useful for filling a quiet week and poor as a foundation. You are often one of several plumbers sent the same enquiry, so you end up competing on price. Your own profile and website produce the leads you keep.

How long does marketing for plumbers take to work?

Paid channels produce enquiries within a fortnight and take around six weeks of testing to settle. Search takes four to six months to build, then keeps working at very little cost per enquiry.

Does a plumber still need a website if the Google profile works?

Yes. The profile wins the emergency call, the website wins the planned work, because that customer wants to see your jobs and reviews before they ring. What the site has to do is set out in our page on websites for tradesmen.

Tell us where your last ten plumbing jobs came from.

Marketing for plumbers is mostly about being found at the right moment and answering when you are. Tell us where your last ten jobs came from and what happened to each enquiry. We will tell you which channel is paying for itself and the one thing we would change first. Half an hour, no charge.

For the wider picture, what we do as a construction marketing agency is on the main page, and our guide to marketing for tradesmen covers the ground every trade shares.
